Turner, Ann. (1987). Nettie's Trip South. New York; Macmillan.
This story documents Nettie's trip south before the breakout of the Civil War. When she got there, she had a lot of trouble understanding why a slave was not a whole person. The first one she met was Tabitha, a maid in a hotel in Richmond; Nettie didn't understand why she didn't have a last name and why the slaves had to live in shacks and other similar buildings. Most of all, she didn't understand the "Negro Auction" where people were bought and sold like they were nothing. Nettie got sick and was taken back to the hotel, where she was left to think about what her life would be like if she only had darker skin.
This is a particularly graphic yet accurate view of slavery in the south poignantly told to her friend Addie in a series of letters, I assume. The innocence of a child spoiled by something so often overlooked in our history makes this book heart-wrenching. It's a beautifully written story though, and I'd use it in my classroom as part of a study of the Civil War.
